Why take out critical illness cover

Critical illness cover not only provides very important protection for you and your family with life expectancy increasing and the chances of suffering from one of the illnesses during your working life very high, but it can also play a vital role in improving your chances of survival by taking off the pressure and stress of meeting your financial commitments during your treatment.

Many illnesses now have treatment's which are too expensive to be available on general NHS prescription but a Critical Illness plan could provide you with the necessary capital to invest in potentially life saving treatment.

Critical Illness cover explained

Many of the options that apply to life assurance are common to Critical Illness policies. They can be arranged on a single or joint basis, and on your own life or that of someone in whom you have an insurable interest.

If combined with a decreasing term or mortgage protection life insurance the policy will decrease in line with your mortgage and provide you with cover to repay the mortgage in the event of you suffering from one of the conditions covered. If arranged on a standalone basis or with a level term life insurance the policy benefit will remain level throughout the term.

Core conditions and comprehensive cover

Critical Illness will cover certain specific conditions. Core conditions are the main widely accepted conditions which will be detailed in the policy documents, if you choose to arrange cover on a comprehensive basis other conditions which are not typically covered such as HIV infection may be included. You should refer to policy documents for different providers to see the differences between their core conditions and comprehensive cover.

Comprehensive cover will usually include cover for total permanent disability and again it is wise to check between providers whether this is for your current type of employment only or if it applies to all forms of employment. If it is limited to your current line of work only this means the cover would not pay out if you were still capable of finding work in another role which could include a significant reduction in salary.

Premiums on critical illness will be either re-viewable or on a guaranteed basis, if re-viewable the cost will be recalculated every five years and may increase. On a Guaranteed basis the premiums will not change for the life of the policy however you will pay more for this option.
